Dry Needling

Dry Needling

WHAT IS IT? IS IT THE SAME AS ACUPUNCTURE?

NO. Both dry needling and acupuncture entail the insertion of small needles into specific areas of the body, but the similarities end there. Dry needling is centered on putting strong stimulation on the muscles to encourage them to release. Acupuncture, on the other hand, does not involve strong stimulation.

IS IT PAINFUL? WHAT KIND OF NEEDLES ARE USED?

Dry Needling uses thin monofilament needles which are inserted into trigger points. These needles penetrate the skin to relieve pain and to help correct imbalances in muscle movement.  Because the needles are so tiny, inserting them is painless. During the application, the muscle may twitch, and it might be uncomfortable if that happens. You will feel a sensation like a muscle cramp. You may feel a little sore right after you get treatment - this is normal, but it doesn't always happen. Soreness usually lasts for 24 to 48 hours.

IS IT SCIENCE-BASED? IS IT EFFECTIVE?

Dry needling is backed by scientific research as well as a modern Western medical practice. Dry needling is a neurophysiological evidence-based treatment technique and an effective treatment for chronic pain and other musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis, reduced range of motion, repetitive motion disorders, like carpal tunnel syndrome, Scar-tissue buildup, disk, and spinal problems,  myofascial pain, and a lot more. To achieve the full effects of dry needling, most patients require at least two or three sessions in the office, however, others may require up to six office visits. Depending on your condition, dry needling can be performed once or twice a week.
